Enigma Variations - Nimrod - Saxophone Octet
Enigma Variations - Nimrod - Saxophone Octet

This arrangement of Edward Elgar’s beautiful Nimrod movement from Enigma Variations was commissioned by Mason Upshaw for his Senior Recital at Kennesaw State University in 2018. The reference recording below was taken during the recital as well. This arrangement plays with the idea of rubato in the form of strict time, but changing meter to convey speeding up or slowing down of tempo, rather than keeping the meter consistent and changing tempo the conventional way. Stair-stepped entrances down the score creates powerful build ups and chordal building and each part from the soprano sax. down to the bass sax. plays a crucial role in making this piece come alive. It’s perfect for any saxophone ensemble performance!
